Bonita Lava Flow at Sunset Crater National Monument
Pine trees grow from the Bonita Lava Flow in Sunset Crater National Monument, Arizona.

Just north of Flagstaff, Arizona is Sunset Crater National Monument. The entire area north and northeast of Flagstaff is a large volcanic area with volcanoes scattered all over the area, the tallest being what are now the San Francisco Peaks, where two of Arizona’s highest peaks are. Sunset Crater itself, however, blew as recently as just 900 years ago. It’s named for a spectacular display of color if caught in the right light. The drive through Sunset Crater can also be combined with the Wupatki National Monument drive for a nice loop full of history.
